The Department of Social Work, MSSV, Nagaon was established in the year 2015. Since its inception, it is being able to attract students from different parts of the North East India. The strength of the Department lies in its untiring effort to educate the students on various societal issues and preparing them to work in diverse situations. Presently, the department offers MSW, Ph.D and M.Phil programmes. MSW programme offers specializations in Community Development, Human Resource Management and Medical & Psychiatry to allow students to gather information on varied fields. The department gives them first-hand experience of different work by placing them in various government & non-government organizations of regional, national and international repute. Being placed in different organizations, the students are being able to convert the theoretical learning into practice which has helped them in getting absorbed in esteemed organizations across the state and country. The department posses sound placement record. At present the department has 4 regular mode faculties and 1 Ad-hoc mode faculty member.

Departmental Activities:
Activities of the department are not limited to field work practicum only. Important days like World mental health day, Human Rights Day, Social work day etc are observed in the department to develop a sense of awareness among the students and university at large. Other activities like awareness programmes on health, hygiene and safety, free health check up are also carried out by the department. Rural camps are also organized every year for the students to give them an in-depth idea about the rural life, the issues and the problems.

Department of Social Work of the varsity in collaboration with the authority organized the first Dr. Sangeeta Das memorial lecture on 27th Aug’17 in the university as a tribute to the late Dr. Das who was the Head (i/c) of the department since its inception. The programme was graced by the Hon’ble Vice-chancellor Prof. K.K.Deka and Registrar Prof. R.C.Borah. The chief guest of the programme was Ms. Meghali Senapati, Associate Prof of TISS,Guwahati Campus. Students and faculty members of other departments remained present in the lecture.
On 15th August 2017, India celebrated 70 years of freedom. To commemorate this event, the Robin Hood Army, a Delhi based Ngo, organized an event #Mission 1 Million which was an ambitious project to feed 1 million people on both sides of the border (Pakistan's independence day is on 14th August). The staff and students of the department of Social Work of Mahapurusha Srimanta Sankaradeva Viswavidyalaya actively participated in this event like last year i.e 2016. The day began at 10am when all the volunteers assembled at 3 Guys restaurant, Guwahati, the food partner for the event and ended at 3pm. A total of 1750 people were fed in the city of Guwahati on that day in the areas of Carbon Gate, Dharmanagar and Lalabasti. The students of Social Work,MSSV, Ghy campus helped with the distribution of food and interacted with the community members of the areas. Indian flags and balloons were distributed among the children who were extremely enthusiastic and performed on patriotic songs before the volunteers.
The teachers’ day was celebrated in the department by the students. Students greeted and offered their wish to the faculties of the department and organized a small formal meeting.

Das Borbora, Head, dptt. of Education, Prof. B.N.Phukan, Head, Dptt. of Yogic science and Naturopathy as well as the faculty members of all departments along with students. The celebration was started with a chorus sung by the students of social work followed by valuable speeches of the dignitaries and special invitees present there.
World social work day’18 was celebrated by the department. Teaching and office staff, students of all departments was invited to the programme. The theme of this year world social work day was promoting community and environmental sustainability. The programme was graced by the Dy. Registrar Dr.D.Thakuria, MSSV, Ghy campus, Prof. R. Das Borbora, Head, dptt. of Education, Prof. B.N.Phukan, Head, Dptt. of Yogic science and Naturopathy as well as the faculty members of all departments along with students. The purpose of the celebration along with the importance of Social Work education was highlighted by Mr. M.K.Gogoi, Head I/C, dptt of Social Work. Students of the department performed various activities like chorus, Forum Theater, speech etc. There was an open interactive session where Faculties and students of other departments actively participated and shared their views on social work and various social issues.

International Women’s Day was celebrated in the university jointly by all departments. Department of social work also actively participated and assisted in the celebration.
The Center for Social Work Studies (CSWS), Dibrugarh had organized EKAYAN, a Social Work students meet in Dibrugarh University from 15th to 17th September’2017. The event had been organized in North-East level. A group of ten (10) students of dptt. Of Social Work had participated in the event. Competitions in different four categories like Debate competition (Jukti-Baan), Installation Competition (Rupantar), Paper Presentation (Yuva-Mot) and Street Play (Bato-Barta) were held. Bhaskar Jyoti Chutia, student of dptt. of Social Work has secured 1st position in debate competition whereas the team secured 3rd position in street play competition. Consecutively for the 2nd time the team of social work, MSSV, Guwahati campus got declared as the Best Disciplined team of the Ekayan’17. The students were Bhaskar Chutia, Gavid Bailung, kakoli Devi, Nomita Pujari, Jitusmita Barman, Sanghamitra Konwar, Nazmin Ara Ahmed, Puja Phukon, Indrakshi Phukan and Sushmita Changmai. The team was lead by Mr. Mrinal Kr. Gogoi, Head (i/c), dptt. of Social work.
A rural camp was organized by the department of social work for the students of 4th semester in Muamari Village under Bindukuri Gaon Panchayat of Tezpur. The Camp was started on 8th April and ended on 12th April’18. During the camp the students had participated and conducted various activities in the village. Students took part in transact walk, house visit for community survey, art competition among school students, community mapping, street play etc with full support, assistance and involvement of the villagers. At the end the team organized a closing ceremony of the camp in the village in the presence of villagers including village Head man and others. The teacher in-charge of the camp was Ms. Pranjuri Goswami, Assistant Pr ofessor, Dptt. of Social Work.

1st Dr. Sangeeta Das Memorial Debate Competition of inter university/college level was organized by the department of Social Work,Guwahati campus,MSSS,Nagaon on 23rd September’2018 at Guwahati campus of the university, Rupnagar, Guwahati. The Registrar (i/c), MSSV, Nagaon Dr. D.Thakuria has graced the event as the hon’ble speaker of the house. Mr. Nabajit Borthakur, DY365,Guwahati and Mr. Gautam Sharma, Senior Journalist,Guwahati were present as Judges. Shri Babul Bora, Chief Secretary, Srimanta Sankaradeva Sangha, Assistant Registrar (Admin), MSSV, Nagaon, Faculties and students of all departments, employees of the university remained present in the competition. Total 25 participants from different institutions of Assam participated in the event.
Students and faculties of Dept. of Social Work, Guwahati Campus, MSSV, participated in a walk against Child Marriage along with a huge gathering coming from various institutions of Assam in Guwahati on 25th November’18 organized by ACRNA, Assam supported by United Nations International Children Emergency Fund (UNICEF).
Dept. of Social Work, Guwahati Campus,MSSV, Nagaon celebrated Children Day on 14th November’2018. The children of the nearby harijan colony were invited to the varsity campus and various group activities, games, competitions were held among them. Prizes were given to the winners and light refreshment was offered to all. Other dept. students, faculties, employees of the varsity joined the same and provided support.
A group of 14 MSW students (both 1st & 3rd semester) initiated a cleanliness drive at Lalmati Gandhi Basti, Guwahati on 10th November’19. They did cleaning activities in the area and also provided some awareness on proper health-hygiene issues. The initiative was supported by dept. of Social Work, Guwahati Campus, MSSV, Nagaon and Rural Women Upliftment Asssociation of Assam (RWUAA), Guwahati
Students of dept. of Social Work, Guwahati Campus, MSSV, Nagaon on the occasion of dipawali went for a fund raising activity through stall giving in the Guwahati campus of the university during lunch break. The items sold were self made snacks and foods by the students as well as diyas, flowers and decorative items made by the differently abled children of Destination, a non-profit making organization of Guwahati.
Dept. of Social Work, Guwahati Campus, MSSV, Nagaon offered tribute to the soldiers who died in the Pulwama Terrorist Attack on 14th February’19. The session was scheduled at 5p.m and all faculties, officers, students and employees were invited to be present at the same. Prof.B.N.Phukan. Head, Dept. of Yogic Science and Naturopathy briefly addressed the gathering followed by the tribute with diyas and flower offered by one and all present in the evening
Students of dept. of Social Work, MSSV, Guwahati Campus observed the day with various activities and performances along with the dept. faculty members.
A plantation drive was undertaken by the dept. of Social Work in the Guwahati Campus of the university on 10th September’18 in the evening. Mr. S. Sarkar, Assistant Registrar (Admin) graced the occasion with his meaningful presence. Students of the department planted some saplings in the campus.
An interactive cum cultural evening ‘Saratar Eti Sandhiya’ was organized by dept. of Social Work in the varsity campus on 11th October’19 4 p.m onwards. It was a programme highlighting on the significance of the month ‘SARAT’ through poems, songs, dance and drama. All teachers, officers, students and employees actively participated in the programme. Atit Saikia, student of MSW 3rd semester did anchoring in the programme.
A group of MSW students participated in a seminar on “Young people and mental health in a changing world’ organized by Destination, A real home for mentally retarded persons in Guwahati University on 10th October’19 on the occasion of World Mental Health Day.

Dr. C.Kakoty, Director, NESPYM, Guwahati and Mr. S. Bordoloi, Chairman, RWUAA graced the occasion as chief guests. Both addressed the audience by delivering dignified and interesting lectures on the significance of the day. Faculties of other departments, students and employees of the varsity attended the same.
Department of Social Work, MSSV,Ghy campus observed the World Social Work Day’19 on the theme ‘Importance of human relationship’ in the department on 19th March’19. The hon’ble Vice-Chancellor,MSSV,Nagaon and Assistant Registar(Admin) graced the occasion with their valuable presence. Both addressed the audience on the significance of the day. Students of department of Social Work gave power point presentation highlighting their learnings, experiences and exposures as student social work trainee while working under various Govt/Non govt. organizations. Faculties of other departments, students and employees of the varsity attended the same.
A one day workshop on ‘Workplace readiness’ was held in the dept. of Social Work on 14th May’19. Resource persons Mr. Sonal Roashan, Project Manager, WAY Foundation and Ms. Rekha Sarmah, WAY Foundation conducted the sessions. A few students from other depts. also participated in it. The focus of the workshop was to bridge the gap between hard and soft skills by fostering important skills such as planning, attitude, social skills, basic skills etc.
A group of MSW students conducted an awareness generation campaign on “Traffic Rules” for the city dwellers of Guwahati on 3rd March’19. They displayed various important messages on road safety and traffic rules through placards in various traffic points of Guwahati. The activity was supported by Care U 365, Guwahati.
A group of MSW students organized an awareness camp on human trafficking and child sexual abuse in Duarkuchi, Baksa district on 10th Novemner’19. Resource persons from different sectors of society were invited to aware the people of the said area on the theme mentioned. The programme was supported by Global Organization for Life Development (GOLD), Guwahati.
