About

Department of Performing Arts, is a new and unique department of Mahapurusha Srimanta  Sankaradeva Viswavidyalaya (MSSV), established in August 2018 in the campus of Guwahati of the University. Interested students can pursue bachelor and master degree in three independent and interrelated branches of Performing Arts i.e. Dance, Music and Theatre where they have to concentrate and improve their theoretical and practical capability in parallel. The department has stepped forward and taken the initiative to promote the 600 years old tradition of Mahapurusha Sankaradeva and Madhavadeva by doing field studies, organizing workshops and seminars and lecture demonstrations  in Dance, Music and Theatre as well as by performing in different places within and outside the state. We would like to tie up with different institutions, colleges and universities within or outside India so that we can promote the culture enormously across the world. 

Courses & Programs

Program Offered

1. Bachelors of Performing Arts (BPA):

About the Programme :

The enrolled students will have to learn the basic knowledge about all the three branches of Performing Arts i.e. dance, music and theatre in 1st and 2nd semester. Then, they will get to choose their major subject as well as one pass course from the three branches in the 3rd and 4th semester. In the 5th and 6th semester, the students will have to focus on their major subjects only.

The three year(Six semester)Bachelor Programme in Performing Arts(BPA) Programme on Modular Basis has three levels: Certificate,Diploma and Degree. The enrolled students in this programme will be given freedom to leave the programme after successful completion of one year and after passing the examinations, he/she shall be awarded a Certificate by the University. Similarly, if a student want to leave the programme after successful completion of the second year and passes the examinations up to Fourth Semester, he/she shall be eligible to receive a Diploma from the University. On successful completion and passing out the examination of the Sixth Semester, he/she shall be awarded the B.P.A Degree.

Admission Procedure:

The eligible students will have to attend an interview conduct by the department.

Eligibilty:

⦁ Higher Secondary (10+2) Examination passed in any stream conducted by Assam Higher Secondary Education Council, or an equivalent examination. 

⦁ Basic knowledge on the branches of Performing Arts i.e. dance, music and theatre.

 

2.MA in Performing Arts ( (Dance): 

About the Programme:  

The enrolled students will be given opportunity to learn specifically the recognized Indian Classical Dance form ‘Sattriya’ along with other classical dance forms such as Bharatnatyam and Kathak as well as other folk dance forms. The priority will be given to Sattriya Dance. After successful completion of the second year and passing the examinations up to Fourth Semester, he/she shall be eligible to receive Master Degree in Dance from the University. 

Admission Procedure:

The selection of the candidates for admission shall be made on the basis of the entrance test conducted by the department.

The entrance test will be comprised with the following procedures-

⦁ Written Examination: 50 marks (MCQ)

⦁ Viva Voce on the performance presented by the candidate: 50 marks

Eligibilty:

⦁ Candidates who have passed B.P.A. (Bachelor of Performing Arts) or B.A. (Performing Arts) from any recognized University. 

⦁  Graduates of any streams having Certificate/Diploma in any dance form from any recognized institute/institution of repute are eligible to appear in the entrance test.

3.MA in Performing Arts (Vocal Music):

About the Programme: 

The enrolled students will be given opportunity to learn specifically the Indian Classical Music (North Indian) along with Western music, Bargeet, Assamese Music and other classical music forms. After successful completion of the second year and passing the examinations up to Fourth Semester, he/she shall be eligible to receive Master Degree in Vocal Music from the University.

Admission Procedure:

The selection of the candidates for admission shall be made on the basis of the entrance test conducted by the department.

The entrance test will be comprised with the following procedures-

⦁ Written Examination: 50 marks (MCQ)

⦁ Viva Voce on the performance presented by the candidate: 50 marks

Eligibilty:

⦁ Candidates who have passed B.P.A. (Bachelor of Performing Arts) or B.A. (Performing Arts) from any recognized University. 

⦁ Graduates of any streams having Certificate/Diploma in any music form from any recognized institute/institution of repute are eligible to appear in the entrance test.

 

4. MA in Performing Arts (Theatre):

About the Programme:

The enrolled students will be given opportunity to learn different aspects of theatre such as acting, direction, designing etc. according to Indian Classical method as well as Modern method. After successful completion of the second year and passing the examinations up to Fourth Semester, he/she shall be eligible to receive Master Degree in Theatre from the University.

Admission Procedure:

The selection of the candidates for admission shall be made on the basis of the entrance test conducted by the department.

The entrance test will be comprised with the following procedures-

⦁ Written Examination: 50 marks (MCQ)

⦁ Viva Voce on the performance presented by the candidate: 50 marks

Eligibilty:

⦁ Candidates who have passed B.P.A. (Bachelor of Performing Arts) or B.A. (Performing Arts) from any recognized University. 

⦁ Graduates of any streams having Certificate/Diploma in any theatre/acting from any recognized institute/institution of repute are eligible to appear in the entrance test.

⦁  Graduates of any streams having previous experience Certificate/Proof of minimum three theatre productions as well as experience of theatre workshops are eligible to appear in the entrance test.  

 

5.Ph.D & M.Phil  in Performing Arts :

 About the Programme:

The Programme has been devised with the motive to propagate and to establish the Assamese Art and Culture in the world stage. The Programme focuses on the creations of Srimanta Sankaradeva and Madhavdeva along with the Indian classical Music and also Indian Folk art and culture. This Programme also focuses on creating a pathway to research the indigenous theatre forms, dance forms as well as music forms of Assam and to establish these forms in front of the peoples of the world.

Admission Procedure:

⦁ The selection of the candidates for admission shall be made on the basis of the result of the Mahapurusha Srimanta Sankaradeva Viswavidyalaya Research Admission Test (MSSVRAT) and Viva-voce.

⦁ The UGC-NET/JRF or passed M.Phil. Degree (through Regular mode only) in Performing Arts i.e. dance, music and theatre will be exempted from the written examination of MSSVRAT in case of admission in Ph.D Programme. However, they shall have to appear in the Viva-voce examination.

Eligibility:

⦁ M.Phil/ Ph.D: Post Graduate students in Performing Arts (Dance/Music/Theatre) from this University or any other University/Institute recognized as equivalent by this University securing minimum 55% marks are eligible to appear in the MSSVRAT. 5% marks will be relaxed for the candidates of the reserved category. Under special circumstances, a candidate may be allowed by the Research Council on recommendation of the Departmental Research Committee to pursue the course in a subject other than one in which he/she obtained Masters Degree, provided that the research council is satisfied that the branches are interrelated and the candidate is competent to undertake the programme in the particular subject.

Annual Departmental Activities:

Department Establishment Day (16th August): On the day, the department celebrates the establishment day of the department by arranging a cultural Programme by the students of the department as well as the alumni of the department. The department felicitates the selected respected persons contributing towards the cultural field of Assam in each year.

⦁ Kalpalok (October): A Course oriented solo presentation i.e. ‘Kalpalok’, an evening of Solo Performance performed by the MA 2nd Semester students of Theatre.

⦁ Mukti Sadhakam (November): A Course oriented Ankiya Bhaona production performed by the 1st semester students of M.A. Programme of the Department of Performing Arts.

⦁ Kalyan Kharman (May): A Course oriented final stage presentation/production of the students of MA 4th Semester of Dance, Music and Theatre of the department.
